What Type Of Outdoor Garden Lighting Should You Choose?

You need to decide what type of light effect you are after and also what works out best for your home and garden. There are three distinct types of outdoor garden lighting to consider.

1) Outdoor Garden Lighting For Security

If it is the security of your home that is your primary concern especially in the winter as the days get shorter it is a good idea to have the right outdoor lighting for security reasons.  These lights are usually very bright and are activated by motion sensors and is normally used in exposed areas of your property, or areas where you want immediate light. It should not be used for living areas as the light is too bright.

2) Task Lighting

The next type or class of outdoor garden lighting is task lighting which can be used for paths and stairs. Ideally these lights should not be too bright and they should be kept as low to the ground as possible. By nature, task lights are not too bright which makes it easier to see.

3) Accent Lighting

Accent lighting is used to highlight a specific element of a given area for effect. A light that focuses upward on an outdoor garden statue for shadow effect is a very typical example. These types of lights can create a silhouette result which can be very effective.  A moonlighting  or star lighting  effect is also another type of lighting which creates the effect of  real moonlight or starlight. To create this effect, you need to have lots of small lights on a few trees and point them downward. To create the appearance of stars, you can put lights in limbs and add some flickering bulbs.

• A good tip is not to over-do it. In many cases, less is more so never add lights if they’re not necessary and most outdoor garden lights  use low-wattage systems which do not cost a lot to run.

• It is best not to have lights pointing upwards. A common thing that people do is to create a runway effect by having the lights going in a straight line up and down paths.

• The color of your lights is important too. Yellow lights make everything look drab. Blue-white bulbs are a much better option, or  daylight bulbs with blue filters.

• You need to place your lights so that you can easily get to them when you need to change bulbs. After your lighting fixtures are set up for the outside of the house, you can enjoy your time outdoors after dark.
